The two main gates

The main gate sits near the Great Pyramid on the Al Haram side and is the busiest entrance. The Sphinx gate at the eastern edge brings you in near the Sphinx and the Valley Temple. Either way you reach the same plateau, so the choice is about traffic and your route.

Opening hours

The plateau is generally open from early morning to late afternoon, with shorter hours in winter and during Ramadan. Going inside a pyramid can close earlier than the plateau, so arrive in the morning if that is on your list.

Getting past the entrance touts

  • Buy only at the official ticket office, not from people in the car park
  • Decline unsolicited guides at the gate unless they are licensed
  • Agree camel and horse prices first, in writing if you can
  • Carry cash in Egyptian pounds for tickets and tips

Skip the gate stress with a tour

A guided tour drops you at the right gate, handles the entry and walks you past the touts. A smooth half day option is the private Giza pyramids and Sphinx tour with a guide.

There are two main entrances. The main gate sits near the Great Pyramid on the Al Haram side, and the Sphinx gate is at the eastern edge of the plateau near the Sphinx and the Valley Temple. Guided tours usually use whichever gate suits the route and the day.

Private cars and tour vehicles can enter and park inside the plateau in designated areas, which saves a long walk in the heat. Independent visitors arriving by taxi are usually dropped near the main gate and walk in from there.
