The great temples of Ramses II

Abu Simbel is two huge rock cut temples of Ramses II, guarded by colossal seated statues. In the twentieth century the whole site was cut up and moved to higher ground to save it from the rising waters of Lake Nasser, an engineering feat almost as remarkable as the temples themselves.

How to get there

From Aswan it is about three hours by road each way, usually as an early morning trip, or a short flight. The drive crosses dramatic desert, and tours time it so you arrive in the cool morning light.

Best time to go

Go in the early morning for the best light and cooler temperatures. The winter months are far more comfortable than the searing summer heat of the deep south.

Tips

  • Start very early, the day is long
  • Bring water and sun protection
  • Pair it with Aswan and a felucca sail

Yes. Abu Simbel is one of the most impressive ancient sites in the world, with two colossal rock temples of Ramses II. Despite the long journey, most travelers find the scale and setting more than worth it.

You usually spend around two hours at the temples themselves. The rest of the day is the journey there and back, which is why an early start is essential, especially in the hot months.
